As a little farewell gift to the remake, here's a small analysis on Ataru and Lum's final exchange in the series.

Personally, I find this exchange very interesting and that it has two very important meanings to it, especially considering how it is phrased:

Ataru saying that he'll eventually say 'I love you', just not now. He basically admits that he loves her here, but indirectly ;) Like, he's not even trying to be tsundere!! There's no 'I don't like you, idiot!!', no 'Yeah, whatever, I guess...' and no ignoring or going 'hmph!'!! He openly states how he feels here and I find this incredible character development considering he could've said any of the previous mentioned but didn't. Early, middle and even the first half of later UY era Ataru would never say such words and would've easily jumped at the options I mentioned but here he basically says 'I love you but I'm not going to say the words until my deathbed'!! It really shows how far Ataru's come especially regarding his relationship with Lum. His major character arc in the series is about growing more comfortable with showing his true self and accepting his emotions and you can really see that he has mostly achieved that by the end. It's beautiful to see how much he's changed and even though this is already so great, what really gets me going feral 100% is the second meaning to their exchange..

The subtle promise in this exchange. Lum tells Ataru the she'll make him say 'I love you' even if it takes her entire life, which suggests that she won't leave him alone till he says the words. Her adding 'even if it takes my entire life' to it, more or less would have what she says mean 'Hopefully, I'll be with you, for life'. Ataru's response is that he'll say it on his deathbed which means that Ataru would only say the magic words right before he dies, which would mean that he wants Lum to be with him till then or to say it in simpler terms, his response would more or less mean 'I want to be with you for life, too'. And since he's supposed to be saying 'I love you' on his deathbed, his words here could also mean 'I'll love you till the end'. This acts as a sort of promise between them, a promise that they'll keep loving and being with each other till the end of time.

To others, it seems like all they're going to do is fight for life, but Ataru and Lum know what they truly mean because no one understands them more than each other.

i recently remembered DickTim Week 2024 is happening very soon and i looked at the prompts again to see if i could get anything out for it and. the Hades & Persephone AU prompt for day 1 has got me really thinking so here's a vague concept i plan to write.

i've been pretty burnt out on modern Hades & Persephone retellings because of how they always seem to fall into the same generic "innocent wide-eyed girl runs from her evil mean mother into the arms of a dark mysterious man because actually she went willingly and chose to marry him" which has gotten repetitive for my tastes. (for clarity i don't care if this retelling is your cup of tea personally, so long as you're not actively trying to rewrite the original myth and claim untrue things about it, if this is your favorite flavor i sincerely hope you enjoy the buffet i just have little interest in it since it feels overdone for me and exhausted of it's supposed commentary atp)

but? but. biblically accurate Hades & Persephone AU has me all kinds of interested. because wait listen so hear me out right. Hades!Dick and Persephone!Tim, obviously. i feel it'd be more loosely inspired by with themes and imagery (though playing with death and nature powers could be interesting, i haven't decided) rather than explicitly making them gods and all. but. something dark and fucked up where Dick and Bruce are especially estranged. maybe to do with Jason's return, maybe to do with them just clashing and having their usual explosive arguments. and Bruce knows the peace needs to be kept, if he and Dick are at odds then everyone starts to pick sides and things just fracture so he needs a peace offering.

and the peace offering is Tim.

Bruce (the stand-in for Zeus) offers up Tim. agrees to have Tim move to Bludhaven and be Dick's... whatever Dick wants him to be. knowing that with the implication comes the likelihood of Dick grooming Tim. and Tim has no real say and is hesitant to put up a real fight. he doesn't want this, he knows what this is going to imply Dick will do to him, but he also knows if he says no things have the possibility to just... fall apart. so he's the unwilling bride, dragged off to the metaphorical underworld (Bludhaven) with Dick, away from his family, his friends, the life he built.

and on the flip side, i think weirdly enough, your best pick for the Demeter stand-in is *Jason*. just, hear me out on that. not necessarily on the side of it being motherly, but on Jason being just estranged enough from the Batfamily to be the one willing to call it out for being bad and wrong and raising bloody hell to get Tim back. maybe it's because Jason wants Tim for himself, maybe it's truly out of a concern for Tim to have autonomy, i'm toying with the idea of it primarily being Tim's POV and him genuinely not knowing which of these is true. (and the truth possibly ends up being a complicated middle ground) and because i like Helena, i think you can use her as the Hekate stand in, the one who strikes a tentative alliance with Jason and tries to go find Tim and bring him back. Tim stuck with Dick, getting groomed and hyperaware of it, possibly even getting fucked the whole time as well, knowing he can't go back without causing massive issues for Dick and Bruce because well, Bruce did promise him to Dick. so he has to adjust his whole life, try to figure out being a vigilante in this new city with Dick breathing down his neck the whole time.

and then much like the ending of the myth, a sort of compromise is struck that's a shaky deal for everyone involved. Tim is put on an essential timeshare, going back and forth between Gotham, where he has friends and family and a support system, then getting dragged right back to Bludhaven with Dick in this brutal cycle that he slowly gets used to and stockholm'd into even liking it. Dick isn't so bad, once he gets used to the quirks of their unbalanced 'relationship'. the sex is even something he can adjust to as well. not quite a happy ending but one that sits in this realistic grey area that becomes Tim's life.

i will write this, eventually, but i don't know if i'll get to it before DickTim Week ends so by posting the idea i'm essentially putting it out into the world so the peer pressure holds me accountable. i just. really like the potential of making Hades/Persephone AUs as fucked up as they can be simply by adhering to the source material and making it a raw story of being stolen away and forced to like this new home you didn't ask for.

also a less fleshed-out aspect of this idea i have ties into Persephone becoming the Queen of the Underworld when she's taken and how the transition from Kore to Persephone could be reflected in Tim. how he makes the best of the worst situation and becomes something far more dangerous and dark when he's in Bludhaven, possibly takes on a new vigilante name/identity and leans into the worst quirks of his personality he tries to tamper because there's no point in not going full tilt Obsessively Weird if he has no choice anyway and it being one small way he takes back his autonomy, and that inevitably making Dick *more* into him, because he gets to see Tim finally just. let loose.

With how many people I've seen play Mouthwashing and genuinely have no idea what's happening at the beginning, trying in earnest to not hit the asteroid, it's very funny to imagine an alternate retelling of events where Jimmy is behaving in a similar way and he simply just has zero clue about what he's doing. He hits the button to disengage autopilot but not out of malicious intent, he's just really stupid.

the only two “versions”. are broadway and 92sies. we do like actually know that right. because those are two different plot lines with different events and entirely different songs.

west end? not a version. it’s a production. it’s new staging and orchestrations which is different for us, and certainly fresh character interpretation, but at the end of the day that’s what it is— interpretation.

so the “livesies and west end are diff versions” (which already doesn’t make sense because then wouldn’t bway and tour be slightly different as well with that argument) is kind of. just. a weird separation in the name of—speaking as a writer here—maybe “keeping the work we already have”. like oh i wrote racer this way but now he’s this way.

guess what! doesn’t matter. it’s a character. there’s no- like no version besides bway script and 92sies script. what you draw character from are the actual words spoken- and yeah, staging will influence you bc if it doesn’t that’s weird, but it’s not a different character. are we. do you get me.

mainly my worry is othering, and personally this fandom cannot afford to do that w/ michael’s jack kelly, because then i’ll become violent and no one wants that :/ a new person playing jack doesn’t make it an other, different jack it just makes it yet another millionth interpretation of jack. yk. like do we get what i’m saying here

Fanfic/fancomic idea I just thought of while watching SpongeBob clips:

Semi-early on in Rocket and Groot knowing each-other/working together, Groot sees Rocket’s cybernetics for the first time. Maybe it’s a similar moment to when Quill first saw them in the prison scene in Vol.1, maybe it was during a particularly intense battle with a bounty and Rocket gets the back of his shirt torn up exposing his back but just yells at Groot to focus on beating the other guy etc.

Whatever the case, Groot sees Rocket’s cybernetics and, not yet fully understanding the concept of cyborgs or anything, tries asking Rocket about them later. But Rocket just keeps either trying to deflect and change the subject or just tells Groot to shut it and quit bugging him about it.

So Groot, having no context or idea of Rockets trauma and everything, starts thinking and filling in the blanks in his own way. And after putting together:

The metal things on rockets body

His habit of stealing peoples robotic prosthetics, batteries and other electronics

The fact Rocket hates taking baths and (seemingly) most liquids apart from alcohol

The fact Rocket never laughs at Groots jokes

And the fact he never shows any genuine emotion other than rage or cockiness

Groot comes to the Galaxy shattering realisation that Rocket is, in fact… A ROBOT.

Aside from the intital internal screaming he has about everything making so much more sense now, Groot does find it strange how mammalian Rocket looks. But then Groot figures, since they have previously caught robot bounties who tried (and failed) to pass themselves as organics by wearing artificial skin, Rocket’s probably doing the same thing.

And oh no, maybe that’s why he was so defensive before about those metal parts of him showing?? Maybe he’s been discriminated against for being a robot and is trying to pass himself off as an organic animal to protect himself? And/or he has a deep seeded internalised robot phobia???? And Groot trying to push him about it made it worse?!??!??

So Groot, after realising the “truth”, tries to be more supportive of rocket and him being a robot. He doesn’t directly confront Rocket or try to press him on it. Since he tried that before and fails and he’s figured out it’s a sensitive subject for rocket. But Groot does his research on robots and tries to figure out what make and model rocket is (with very few results) so he can better look after him incase he malfunctions or something, he makes sure to “borrow” extra batteries and oil canisters when ever they’re at a place with electronics because he figures that’s what he really uses for sustenance instead of all the burgers and junk food he eats in front of Groot for (what he thinks is) the sake of appearance, tries to stop him from getting wet whenever it rains or they visit a mostly water-covered planet, calls Rocket out if/whenever he makes crude comments about other robots because (internally) Groot draws the line at Rocket taking his own issues about being a robot out on his fellow robots etc etc. All because Groot doesn’t care what Rocket is and just wants his best friend to be happy and feel safe and accepted as he is. As well as for him to trust Groot enough to come out in his own time when he feels ready.

Meanwhile Rocket is just. Completely baffled by Groot acting so weird around him all the sudden and doing all this. And no idea Groot thinks he’s a robot because of his cybernetics. Eventually culminating when things escalate out of hand and Groot cutting to the chase, gently telling rocket he knows he’s a robot and that he doesn’t have to be afraid of hiding it anymore because Groot still cares about him no matter what.

…And rocket, slightly less gently, telling Groot that goD FLARKIN DAMNIT GROOT!!! IM NOT A GODDAMN ROBOT YOU STUPID MOLDY OVERGROWN PEICE OF CRAP TWIG!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Basically, it’s the Krab Borg episode of SpongeBob if SpongeBob tried being a supportive robot ally to Mr.Krabs instead of jumping him in his office with Squidward.

sorry i know i cant stop people from having their headcanons or aus or whatever but i find it kinda silly when people present the idea of silver being shadows son as if its an actual plausible theory.... because all the "evidence" for it is very minor stuff thats easily explained away . and then theres also the fact that in the 06 timeline shadow was put back into stasis shortly after iblis destroyed the world because humanity was looking for someone to blame for it. and silver also says that iblis has been around since before he was born. im aware that the future is always changing so a future where an adult shadow is around to interact with a tiny little baby silver isnt entirely out of the question but wouldnt this plot detail make shadow being silvers biological father very unlikely if not outright impossible??
